I am a mixed media studio artist and educator. I've created this blog to showcase my art teaching and related activities. The main purpose of this blog is to act as an online press kit for teaching art camp, art school, art in higher education, artists residencies, conducting workshops and the like.
For the past 22 years I have focused my creativity on the folklore and history surrounding my southeastern Native American roots. I specialize in painting and sculpture and what I call “hybrid composite” art, an approach that meshes digital/photographic elements with hand-rendered art. This work combines layers of organic textures and patterns, human and animal depictions, metaphysical content and historical references. My reverence for the natural world, and the recurring theme of cultural identity have been unifying elements in my work over time.
In addition to being of mixed English, African American and Native American ancestry, I have a diverse international background, as well as a broad practical knowledge base within the disciplines of fine art and design. I was internationally trained in the USA, China, Germany and France. This includes study of traditional Chinese painting at the China Central Academy of Fine Arts and figurative art in France at Parson’s in Paris. I have also worked as a sculpture technician, building monumental brick and tile figures for the Munich water company in Munich, Germany. However, it was my two years of study in China that had the most profound impact on me as a developing artist.
