Participation involves a whole-brained experience of exploring and integrating information, where analogies are drawn and "the whole is always greater than the sum of its parts.”</i></div>

This three-day workshop was divided into morning and afternoon sessions. We started with a more personal exercise in self-reflection/expression using collage, a mixing-and-matching activity as creativity warm up. Then led into projects using skills and concepts that subtly build upon one another. The culminating project, Seeing and Drawing Sounds, offered more leeway, allowing for the free adaptation of the skills and concepts covered.</div>

<span style="font-family: inherit;">Have you ever dabbled in iMovie? If so, and if you’re somewhat geeky, you know that it’s way too fun to learn, and takes up way too much time! </span><span style="font-family: inherit;">I taught myself how to use iMovie in 2015 during a stint of jet lag after arriving in Hangzhou, China for a month-long teaching residency. Basically, I was awake in the middle of the night for two weeks straight, which afforded me the quiet time to learn.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />…So, I’m happy to announce that this post contains the video </span><span style="font-family: inherit;">”Creative Concepts” UCC Teaching Travelogue Part 1. </span>It documents the workshop and also re-visits my 2015 family trip to attend the Boole 200 Bicentenary Celebration.<span style="font-family: inherit;"> </span><span style="font-family: inherit;">There is also a Part 2, which includes a trip to Dublin after delivering the workshop in Cork. For both Parts 1 and 2, Dublin recording artist, Stano generously allowed me free use of the music from three of his recent CDs. This made for a very integrated project, which is, for lack of a better description, a collage experiment done in iMovie.</span></div>

As a visual artist, images, gifted to me in dreams, have helped me recover cultural information that has been forgotten or seemingly lost. In this workshop, dreams are used as a springboard for the release of creative self-expression. We explore drawing in full color through the free association of ideas in much the same way I use dreams in my studio practice. Basic concepts relating to dreams and to “perceived reality” are discussed from a cross-cultural perspective. *No art or drawing experience necessary (offered for C.E.U. credit).</div>

Dreams, Prophecy & Native American Cultural Reawakening-My Journey as a Dream Guided Artist</h2>
A major theme in my artwork has been the reawakening of southeastern Native American culture, and dreams have always been an integral part of this journey and narrative. In fact dreams and visions have played a major role in the development of this theme over the past 20 years.<br />
<br />
This workshop started with a presentation, where I shared examples of my dream-conceived art and discussed how the work progressed thematically over time. We also discussed basic concepts relating to dreams and to “perceived reality”, comparing events in our dream world to experiences in our waking hours.<br />
<br />
My intention was to demonstrate how symbolic images, gifted to me in dreams and waking visions, and illustrated in my art, have literally brought me face to face with the lost history and culture of my Native American ancestors.</div>

The 7th Generation Philosophy</h2>
I managed to come up with quite the bundle of information all connected to my dream inspired work: historical, spiritual, political, personal and transformational. I also discussed the traditional concept of artist as shaman and the role of dreams and dreamers in Native American culture in general.<br />
<br />
Near the end of the presentation I zeroed in on the 7th Generation philosophy, which has greatly influenced my art. The 7th Generation philosophy is like a strategic plan founded upon earth consciousness. It says we should always project 7 generations forward in decision making when it comes to things like water, air and earth. We should ask ourselves what will be available 7 generations from now?<br />
<br />
Black Elk (holy man) and Crazy Horse (warrior), both Oglala Lakota, had similar visions, along with many other indigenous leaders across North America. The visions showed a period of great darkness and suffering (Crazy Horse even saw cars, planes and both world wars before these things came into existence).<br />
<br />
These visions led to the Prophecy of the 7th Generation, which foretells of a cleansing time 7 generations after contact, where Indians and people of all races would dance together under the Sacred Tree.<br />

Standing Rock</h2>
In fact, people of all colors have recently come together at Standing Rock to protect the water from the Dakota Access Pipeline. The young leaders of this movement, in their role as Water Protectors, consider themselves to be the “7th Generation” and are stepping up to fulfill this prophecy.</div>

I was to create and teach an experimental printmaking course (based on my own "Digital Hybrid Art" approach). In my residency within the Printmaking Department I had the students create hybrid works combining conventional drawing and printmaking with digital techniques in Photoshop to illustrate/express an "Identity Narrative." </span><br />

<span style="font-family: inherit;">30 plus years have passed since I was last in China, when I was studying at The Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) Middle School in Beijing as a teenager…and 40 plus years have passed since I was there as a child of 9 at the tail end of Mao’s Cultural Revolution running free with my little friends in Dazhai Village in the hills of Shanxi Province waving corn cob embers to draw animals in the night sky.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: inherit;">Shortly after I arrived, the security desk man (who's name eludes me) gave me some recent issues of the China Art Weekly Magazine to look at, and I was immediately struck by the realization of just how deep my early study of Traditional Chinese painting had truly been. </span><br />

In this workshop Hinton will discuss her work, demonstrate her process with mixed media creations and talk of sources of inspiration in her art. Emphasis will be on improvisation and play in the collage process with a variety of mixed media combinations. The focus of this workshop is on experimenting with fabric combinations, digital printing and painting of background layers, joining methods and embellishment options. This is an interactive workshop where students are encouraged to share their energy and imagination, in the true spirit of art making.<br />

It gave me a chance to further explore and teach two things that I've been interested for a long time and have done some on my own in the past. With the latter, no matter what your discipline, you have your primary "medium" to work with, that being people, and, in my case, adolescents far away from home. While teaching, I tried to remain as open as possible to the desires of the students while compromising as little as possible my course objectives, or what I saw as the desired outcome (concepts, skills, and attitudes) of a given activity. I found this to be a constant challenge. How does a teacher maintain a balance between the realm of divergent thought, where there are no right or wrong answers, and the world of straight forward mastery and imitation of fundamental skills and/or facts? How willing should the instructor be to allow students to run into roadblocks on their own, forcing them to grapple with the frustration of the perceived failure? How much value should be placed on learning by trial and error? What is the meaning of success? Is it in the process or the finished piece? Should the teacher see it as her job to foresee all the stumbling blocks by designing assignments along with prescriptions for the attainment of the desired product likeness and accompanying attitude? It seems that the teacher's human relations skills and ability to be flexible are just as important as his/her proficiency in the given field. Likewise, the student's personal perception of a given circumstance, whether accurate or projected, is the key to his/her ability to absorb the information the teacher wishes to convey, no matter how enlightened that information may be. As Rama Krishna stated "If you try to open a nut when the shell is still green, it is almost impossible, but when it is ripe, just tap it and it falls open". To what extent should the teacher try to meet the student on his/her level, given the long term learning objectives of the assignment as well as time and space constraints and other classroom logistics?</b></span></div><div style="font: 12.0px Helvetica; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: small;"><b><br />
</b></span></div><div style="font: 12.0px Helvetica; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: small;"><b>I feel very strongly that the ultimate goal of education should be one of personal empowerment (This was a major part of my original philosophy upon graduating from the art education department at Kutztown University). I believe it is the teacher's responsibility to help students evolve and grow by showing them ways to go about acquiring the information they need as individuals and by inspiring them to participate fully in their own intellectual and creative development. In other words, what students need most is to learn how to learn. By helping to stimulate students' awareness and sensitivity to the natural and social environment, I would hope to encourage them to trust their own experiences and perceptions. Through this I would convey a message of self reliance in terms of one's own inner source of creativity and ability to solve problems in art and in life. Therefore, it is equally important for students to attain concrete technical skills in order to be able to effectively represent their ideas and concepts. These skills should be taught directly (demonstrated) and practiced within the context of interesting and appropriate assignments. I believe that concepts or approaches should be taught contextually when possible, meaning that even basic exercises should be made into an opportunity to create a unified work of art. </b></span></div><div style="font: 12.0px Helvetica; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;"><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: small; white-space: pre;"><b> </b></span></div><div style="font: 12.0px Helvetica; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: small;"><b>Art history and criticism are valuable tools for putting information and approaches into perspective. By taking initiative to actively (openly and honestly) participate in the critiquing process with clearly defined but simple criteria, students can learn how to assess their own and others' development more objectively and how to support their views with reasons. Once students are introduced to the basic principles and elements of a work of art and asked to speak explicitly about what they experience on a visceral level, they begin to view their own work and process with a more critical eye. Observing works of art from the present and past can serve to enhance one's own understanding of the role of artists in society and the relationship of an individual artist's or student's vision to that of other artists. It is important for students to know that there is almost always someone out there who is working in a similar manner or with similar concepts, and the lives and works of these people can be viewed as artistic "allies" to be learned from.</b></span></div><div style="font: 12.0px Helvetica; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;"><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: small; white-space: pre;"><b> </b></span></div><div style="font: 12.0px Helvetica; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: small;"><b>My present teaching philosophy takes on the form of an experiment in classroom dynamics that I would put into effect with the idea that change and growth and the unknown are all integral and important variables in teaching and in learning. The teachers who had the most lasting positive effects on my growth as a young artist were the ones who facilitated and supported my path, and did not try to over direct or pretend that they had all the answers for me. To teach is to learn, and, simply put, I believe that to inspire creates a more lasting impression.
